Simple and Stylish Hairstyles for Women Over 50

There’s a common misconception that once you hit 50, you’re “too old” to rock certain styles. Well, we’re here to tell you that’s simply not true! Go ahead and toss those antiquated beauty standards out the window. You can rock whatever hairstyle you want at whatever age you choose! However, if you are looking to change up your look and need some creative ideas, we’re here to help. Here is some hair inspo for women over 50 to help you find your best look!

BALAYAGE IS YOUR FRIEND

White hair comes with age and for most women, their solution is to color their hair to hide the white. So if you’re already planning on coloring your hair, try getting some balayage done as well!

But what is balayage? Basically, balayage is a more natural highlighting technique that sweeps the hair lightener onto your hair. This gives the highlights more of a blended and natural look. This is especially good for someone older. Of course, your hair color is highly dependent on skin tones, but generally darker colors can have an aging effect. To avoid that issue, balayage can give you a softer, lighter, and more natural appearance. As a bonus: going lighter can help hide those pesky greys! It’s a win-win situation!

If you’re not feeling a color change but still want a new do, fret not! You have more options.

SOFT LAYERS

A simple way to give your hair some vavavoom after age 50 is by incorporating soft layers. It’s an easy way to change up your current hair without doing something drastic. Soft layers can naturally contour your face by adding dimension. They are meant to help frame your face which can give you a natural face lift.

Another plus about soft layers? Just like with balayage, it’s gradual. But instead of a gradual color change, you get a gradual length change. It’s a good way to test the waters if you want to experiment with shorter styles. If you want a shorter look, but you’re too scared to go all in, this is the best way to start.

THE BOB AND LOB

Looking for something short and sassy? A bob or a lob is your new best friend. The classic bob haircut is always a go-to when you’re ready to change up your look. A nice, simple, chin-length hair cut... right? Yes and no. A ‘bob’ is really an umbrella term that includes more than just the classic Anna Wintour hairstyle most people think of when they hear the term “bob haircut.”

A bob can range in length. The typical chin-length hair style is definitely an option we love, but there’s also the long bob also known as a “lob.” The lob’s length hits right above or at your shoulders. Because the lob is longer (obviously) than a normal bob, it’s more versatile and give you more opportunities to play with different styles.

Now, if you’re ready for an actual bob, there are many options for you! Don’t be afraid to try different styles, you have tons of options: asymmetrical, a-line, shaggy, and blunt. You can work with your stylist to play with length and shape to see which style works best for you. The limits are endless!

PIXIE CUT

Balayage, layers, and bobs are great and all, but here at Rinse Salon, we love a pixie cut. Pixie cuts are bold, low maintenance, and edgy - perfect for women who want to try something new. Before you go believing that you could never pull off this type of hairstyle, you might be surprised to know that pixie cuts can flatter most face shapes.

Just like longer styles, the pixie cut can also really accentuate the features and shape your face. With the natural lift of hair on top and the little pieces to frame your face, your features are able to be perfectly emphasized. You can play with different ways to style your pixie to help emphasize these features. Though a very short cut, don’t let the pixie fool you. It is very versatile and can be done in many ways!

Just like the bob, a pixie cut is an umbrella term for several different styles. Wispy and soft, sharp and edgy, or you can even add bangs to the look! It really depends on your personality and what look you’re going for. Talk to your stylist and work with them to see which style is best for you, your face, and most importantly your personality!

Whichever style you choose, don’t be afraid to just go for it! Our stylists here at Rinse have years of experience with women over 50 and we’re here to help you figure out what’s best for you. When you’re ready, book an appointment with us, we’d love to help you redefine your look!
